Effect of Intestine Extract on Liver Regeneration in Male Albino Rat

Abstract
In the normal cell population of the liver of the adult animals, the mitoses are rarely found. However, it has been believed that extrinsic -stimuli such as partial hepatectomy or hepatotoxic drugs would stimulate the proliferative activity of the liver cells.
Recently, Several investigators suggested that the HPBF(hepatotropic portal blood factor) would regulate the live cell regeneration.
In order to confirm this concept, the authors injected 2m1 of the small intestine extract, presumed source of the HPBF into the hepatectomized male albino rat. The experiment was performed at 6:OOA. M. , the time of the highest proliferative activity of the liver cell.
The mitotic indices of regenerating liver were calculated at 24, 32, 48 and 72 hours after the treatment and the consequences were discussed.
The results thus obtained were as follows.
1. Small intestine extract accelerated the liver cell regeneration in the partial hepatectomized male albino rat.
2. The liver cell regeneration rate in the non hepatectomized rat injected with small intestine ext¡þ
ract was lower than that of the partial hepatectomized rat injected with saline.
3. The liver cell regeneration rate of the partial hepatectomized rat injected with small intestine
extract reached the peak at 32 hours after the treatment.
4. The mitotic index was decreased nearing 72 hours after the treatment.
